Pyeloplasty

banner

Pyeloplasty is a kidney surgery that removes the offending obstruction that is stopping the natural flow of urine out of the body and repairs any damage that has occurred due to high fluid pressures deforming the kidney.

Need for the Surgery

Pyeloplasty is done if a blockage is found at the kidney’s connection to the ureter. This blockage can be due to congenital abnormalities like horseshoe kidney, fibrous scarring due to stone or previous surgery or infection, a blood vessel located in wrong position over the ureter causing its obstruction and a stone that gets impacted in the upper part of ureter. This blockage causes the urine to build up, the kidney to balloon, and leads to kidney pain, nausea, vomiting, urinary tract infections and finally leads to the damage of the kidney.

Details of the surgery

The various Pyeloplasty methods are called open pyeloplasty, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, and minimally invasive laser retrograde endopyelotomy.( Endopyelotomy:-Endopyelotomy is an endoscopic procedure to treat ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. The kidney is either approached through the Percutaneous Nephrostomy tube (from the side i.e. Antegrade Endopyelotomy) or through the urethra and urinary bladder (Retrograde Endopyelotomy ). Endopyelotomy relieves the obstruction in the upper part of the ureter called the renal pelvis )
